Acoustic Specifications

In broad terms, the acoustic performance of buildings is controlled as part of the National Planning Policy Framework alongside the relevant Building Regulations Approved Document E.

In practice, developers are most likely to encounter acoustics as part of any Local Authority Planning Conditions applied to the development.

Acoustic Specification Assessment

Acoustic Assessments tend to fall into two sectors:

1. Exterior Noise affecting the development, most commonly assessed according to BS8233:2014 Guidance on Sound Insulation and Noise Reduction of Buildings.

2. Noise from the development (typically air conditioning units, extract systems, etc) affecting nearby noise-sensitive receptors, most commonly assessed according to the BS4142:2014 Methods for Rating and Assessing Industrial and Commercial Sound.

Thermal and Acoustic Solutions can provide guidance and support in preparing acoustic assessment reports to satisfy the requirements of local authority planning conditions.

In addition to these commonly required types of acoustic assessment, Thermal and Acoustic Solutions can also provide support in other specialist areas such as Schools (BB93), BREEAM, Health and Medical (HTM 08-01), Noise from Pubs and Clubs, Air Source Heat Pumps (MCS 020), Building Reverberation Time and Speech Intelligibility (STIPA) assessment.
